According to Chainz himself, he earned his original rap name Tity Boi because of his mother. While he was growing up with his mom, his dad got in touch with him from prison and gave him some tough love in an attempt to balance out his skills.
Chainz had grown up with a pretty good head on his shoulders. By the time he was a teenager, he was attending North Clayton High School where he was able to witness firsthand come up of R&B singer and classmate Monika. Seeing that type of success started getting 2 Chainz ideas for himself.
Basketball Career:
But at that age his primary concern was basketball, standing at 5 feet 5 inches, he joined the basketball team which was a bit of a brainer for Chainz. He became a breakout player for his team and the sixth man off the bench.
In the 1992-1993 season Chainz and his team ran the table for the class to double a state title after going 10-10 to start off. By his senior year, Chainz was a legitimate division one recruit and getting attention from the University of Memphis which was looking to replace its former star player Penny Hardaway.
But after graduating near the top of his class from North Clayton school, Chainz earned himself a scholarship to Alabama State University and declare for their program.
He played a full season of division one ball there from 1996 to 1997. Chainz averaged just less than 11 minutes per game. The best state line came in the season finale against Alcorn State where he put up 14 points and 7 rebounds in just 10 minutes.
While there have been rumors online that Chainz then went on to graduate from ASU with a 4.0-grade average, he shot down those rumors himself. 2 Chainz transferred to Virginia State University due to circumstances that he doesn’t like to get into, apparently he did graduate from Virginia State.
Music Career:
Despite his success in basketball, 2 Chainz abandoned the sport to concentrate on creating a music career for himself. He had been working on his music as early as 1997 when he hooked up with rapper Earl “Dolla Boy” Conyers. The two got along well and decided to form the rap group known as Playaz Circle.
Around that time 2 Chainz adopted the new moniker Tity Boy and the two began recording and did some independent releases like United We Stand, and United We Fall, in the year 2002. Eventually, their hustle got them into contact with a local DJ named Ludacris.
Nonetheless, Ludacris was impressed with their talent and he signed them both to his Disturbing The Peace label. That was the time when Chainz’s collaborator Dolla Boy went to prison for two years. When Dolla was released from jail the two got to work recording the song Play Pen To The State Pen.
The only problem was some of the top executives at the label weren’t too excited about releasing any of Playaz Circle’s music through their partnership with Def Jam. So these two had to resort straight to street albums and mixtapes.
The two dropped their debut single “Duffle Bag Boy” featuring Lil Wayne in 2007 which blew up big. 2 Chainz also got a chance to perform that single at the BET Hip-Hop Awards. They went on to release two albums including “Supply & Demand,” and “Strength In Numb3rs” and were on a bit of a roll. From there 2 Chainz decided to leave Playaz Circle and went on solo.
Success as a Solo:
In 2008 2 Chainz was supposed to appear on Lil Wayne’s hit song Mrs. Officer. Around that time he decided to throw a couple of necklaces and change his name to the more family-friendly 2 Chainz. Following this change of persona he started releasing songs like No Lie, I Am Different, and Birthday Song, all of which became hits.
He followed those up with features the likes of Kanye West on Mercy and Drake’s All Me. In fact, over the years 2 Chainz became one of Drake’s most prolific collaborators working with him on more than eight tracks already at this point.
2 Chainz began releasing his own mixtapes and albums including his debut album Based on a T.R.U. Story which was released in March of 2012. The single No Lie was the lead single in that album and it became a massive hit. The album became a commercial success selling over 147,000 units within 1 week and debuting at the #1 spot on the Billboard Top 200.
That project became the turning point of his career although it earned mixed reviews. It led the rapper to embark on his international tour and also the album received 3 Grammy Awards nominations as well as numerous others.
Not to mention the rapper won multiple BET Hip Hop Awards in several categories. At that moment his music caught the attention of many big brands and agencies with who he signed an endorsement deal.

Aside from Dolla Boy, the guest appearances for the album came from artists like Pharrell Williams, T-Pain, Rich Home Quan, Lil’ Wayne, Drake, Fergie, and some more prominent hip-hop stars. The album earned well reviews but not as much success as his debut album.
The rapper Lil Wayne and 2 Chainz teamed up to record their collaborative album titled ColleGrove which was released in 2016. That same year he dropped two more mixtapes including Daniel Son: Necklace Don and Hibachi for Lunch.
In the next year 2 Chainz’s 4th studio album, Pretty Girls Like Trap Music was released. To record that project Chainz collaborated with a number of high-profile rappers and the album earned incredible success from the citric.
