Ricky was born Ricardo Bell on the 18th of September 1967 in Roxbury, Boston, Massachusetts, to parents Daniel A and Dorothy Mae. Bell is of Puerto Rican, Guatemalan, Japanese, and Jewish descent.
As the youngest of 11 children, Bell grew up in Orchard Park Projects. His siblings are including Mark, Dorothy, Marcel, Bettina, Kevin, Loretta Bell-Lewis, Tyrone, Wayne, Daniel, Lawan, and Anthony Bell.

Ricky started his singing career with the help of his close friend named Ralph Tresvant and the two began recording music under the moniker, Ricky and Ralph.
Then in 1978 came up with the idea of founding a music group called “New Edition” along with his friends Michael Bivins, Bobby Brown, Ralph Tresvant, and Ronnie DeVoe.
The group started their career in the same year and has been together for almost 30 years. In the mid-1980s another member Johnny Gill entered the group after Brown’s departure.

Bell had fought substance abuse in the mid-1990s. He began taking marijuana, cocaine, ecstasy, alcohol, and Oxycontin. He even went so far as to lose his house and sold all of his private belongings to feed his addiction.
As a result, he finally overdosed on cocaine and was almost close to the end of his life, leading him to enter rehab. Bell has stayed sober after completing therapy from rehab. Bell’s addiction struggles were not disclosed until the release of the miniseries back in 2017.
