How Many People Are Related to Genghis Khan

Genghis Khan, born as Temujin in the early 13th century into a nomadic Mongol tribe, began his journey from humble origins to become one of history’s greatest conquerors. As the founder and the first Great Khan of the Mongol Empire, his life and accomplishments left an unforgettable mark on the world.

Apparently, it isn’t only becoming one of the most renowned leaders that lives as Genghis Khan’s legacy today.

Genetic studies have revealed a fascinating aspect of Genghis Khan’s inheritance – his descendants at millions. These studies indicate that a specific Y-chromosome, in approximately 16 million males across Central Asia, points to a shared paternal lineage traced back to Genghis Khan.

This unique Y-chromosome haplotype, present in such a vast number of men, finds its origins primarily in Genghis Khan’s era. Considering he had numerous children born from his wives and mistresses, it becomes apparent why he is strongly linked to these men.

16 million is such a vast number, but the number of people related to Genghis Khan could be even higher. Although we can’t know without Genghis Khan’s genome, we have some guesses on how many people might be related to him.

Genghis Khan’s Love Life

Genghis Khan had countless wives and concubines, a common practice for his time. Some records estimate that he fathered children with over 2,000 women. While this may seem like an astonishing number, it is more than plausible considering his 21-year reign as the ruler of the Mongol Empire.

The relentless cycle of conquests and the Mongol tradition of claiming everything on the land, including women, likely contributed to this figure. As Genghis Khan expanded his empire and conquered new territories, many women were forced to either marry him or become his mistresses.

He’s famously quoted as saying: “A man’s greatest joy is to slay his enemy, plunder his riches, ride his steeds, see the tears of his loved ones, and embrace his woman.”

Taking the women of the land as his own was just a part of expanding his empire for Genghis Khan. It had a big place in the Mongol tradition also. His first wife, Börte, was kidnapped by a rival tribe after attacking Genghis Khan’s family camp before he united the Mongol tribes, for example.

While Genghis Khan had countless children with numerous women, only the sons of the chief wife (Börte) were the legitimate heirs. He had four sons with Börte, all of which were involved with ruling or expanding his empire.

Genghis Khan’s sons also followed him during his conquests. The children his sons had with their wives and concubines are also likely to have contributed to the number of people related to him.

Calculating Genghis Khan’s Descendants

His life as the Khan of the Mongol Empire justifies why Genghis Khan is strongly linked to these genetic studies.

While the study puts the number at around 16 million, it only accounts for the direct male-line descendants. It doesn’t include the descendants through female branches of the family tree. The actual number could be much higher, even doubling it. Some estimates even suggest his descendants could be in the hundreds of millions.

Even with these speculations, as broad as they might be, it’s hard to pinpoint exactly how many people are related to Genghis Khan without his DNA samples. Since his tomb has never been found, these are only wild guesses and statistical models at best.

How You Can Find Your Descendants and Relatives

The estimates and making assumptions aren’t accurate ways of finding how many people are related to a person. Luckily, we have the internet in the 21st century! Lookup tools out there can scan records and bring individuals that are related to a person.

Assuming you’re not related to as many people as Genghis Khan, finding your relatives should be fairly quick. One exemplary way to perform a search like this is with Information.com’s people lookup.

The advanced people search feature of this website compiles a comprehensive report. This report includes the relatives you have, along with their social media accounts and current and past addresses. If you’ve lost contact with a relative or recently found the existence of one, you can utilize it to learn more about them.

There isn’t a definitive answer to how many people are related to Genghis Khan. However, you can use a lookup tool to discover how many relatives you have. You can even learn the whereabouts of a family member you didn’t even know existed.
