Early Life
A 52 years old musician, Kirk Dewayne Franklin was born on the 26th of January 1970 in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas, to father Dwight. His parents were teenagers when Kirk was born and he was raised by his aunt Gertrude after his mother abandoned him at the age of 3.
To raise some money for his education his aunt Gertrude worked to recycle aluminum cans. Kirk was just 4 years old when his aunt gave him money to learn piano lessons.
Kirk got his first contract which his aunt turned down when he was 7 years old. He entered the church choir in order to pursue a music career and would become music director of the Mt. Rose Baptist Church adult choir by the age of 11.
While growing up in his hometown of Fort Worth, Kirk attended Oscar Dean Wyatt High School where he also learned music with Jewell Kelly and the Singing Chaparrals. He later returned to the church and began directing the choir at the age of 15 after he lost his friend in a shooting.
That was the same time when Franklin co-founded a gospel group known as The Humble Hearts. He immediately caught the attention of Gospel music legend Milton Biggham who chose him to lead the choir at the Gospel Music Workshop of America Convention in 1990.

In the year of 1992, the popular label GospoCentric Records label contacted to Kirk’s 17-voice choir called “The Family” to sign a deal. Kirk Franklin & The Family was the group’s debut album which was released in 1993 and it has sold more than 1 million units.
The album received platinum sales status and stayed at number one on the Billboard Top Gospel Albums chart for forty-two weeks. In 1996 the group dropped their 3rd album titled Whatcha Lookin’ 4, which also became their last album.
