Risks of Sharing Your Phone Number on the Internet

Most Internet users naively believe that one of the safest options for registering on various online services or applications involves the use of a phone number. But is it so in practice? Let’s look into it.

In modern society, it is so that smartphones have firmly mastered in our lives. And because of its popularity, the Android system is often subjected to hacker attacks and hacks. For example, there are remote access viruses that allow you to completely monitor the device, or spyware, which is a server that will send data to the client. All this makes the number not at all a secure means of authentication.

The situation with iOS devices is better, thanks to the robust security of the operating system. But still no one can guarantee you the complete security of your device.

Besides, Sometimes hackers manage to hack into the bases of famous messengers, social networks and apps, stealing millions of phone numbers in the process. Now let’s find out what harm can be caused by leaking your personal phone number online.

Consequences of Using Personal Phone Number for Online Registrations

I suppose, many people could notice how after tying the number for registration, after some time you start to be attacked by all kinds of spam mailings, annoying calls with various offers and absolutely unnecessary targeted advertising. The point is that in addition to hacker attacks, your contact information can be sold by the companies themselves. Such information is very valuable for various spammers and advertisers. After getting your phone number in the spammers’ database, only changing the number can help to stop spam. But if you change your phone number, then there will be problems with the restoration of accounts for which this number was necessary.

In summary, we can say that the number is not a secure means of authentication. As an alternative option, I advise you to use a temporary phone number or additional mail (if there is such an opportunity) for registration, so that spam does not clutter the main box and private phone number.

What is a Temporary Phone Number & How do I get One?

A temporary phone number is a number that can be used for a limited period of time for a specific purpose, such as account activation. Once successfully activated, the cell phone number is automatically deactivated and cannot be used again. Most often temporary phone numbers are used to ensure privacy and protection of personal information online, when registering on websites, applications or services.

To obtain a temporary number through SMS-man or a similar service, you will most likely need to follow the instructions provided by the service itself.

Typically, the process of obtaining a temporary number involves the following steps:

  1. Registering with the service. If you do not have an account with SMS-man or a similar service, you may need to register and create an account. To do this, you will only need a valid e-mail address.
  2. Funding your account. You may need to top up your account, as most services provide temporary phone numbers for a fee.
  3. Select a temporary phone number. Once you have topped up your account, you will be able to choose a temporary number from the available options. Usually, you will have the option to choose a mobile number from different countries and regions.
  4. Using the service. Once you have a temporary phone number, you can use it to receive SMS confirmation codes, register on websites, or for other purposes for which you need a temporary number.
